Hot off the Press!

A big thank you goes out to Stewart Kemp for writing this wonderful article that was featured in Hornsea Community News: May 2019.

“Nicky Mills has just created her own range of cards for all occasions named ‘Pen and Gwyn’ which are both designed and illustrated by her. This is just the start of what Nicky, 26, hopes will be part of a larger collection of her art and Media talents.

Nicky is originally from Northumberland and after leaving school she attended York St John University, qualifying with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Media. Nicky initially decided to go into teaching and being adventurous she started her career teaching English in South Korea. After one year she accepted a second teaching position in Spain where she was given the opportunity to teach Art alongside English.

Nicky rediscovered her love for painting and illustrating and decided this is where her heart was. Nicky’s’ boyfriend Sam, who she had met at University, was from Hornsea and so the pair moved back to his hometown with his parents and with their full support she has been able to launch her business dream.

Her first range of cards are now stock in both the Townhouse and Summerhouse in Hornsea and The Pamperhouse in Beverley. Nicky has 1000 cards and hopes to expand into gift wrap and paper goods and is hopeful that this first collection will be the start of a successful business. In the future she is looking to expand into bespoke children’s name illustrations as her next project.Nicky hopes in the future to run classes in watercolours.

Nicky who confesses that she is living her dream will also have a stand at a Craft and Flea Spring Special at Hull Minster on Saturday, May 11th with her cards, artwork and commissions.

Nicky can be contacted via her Facebook page or Instagram account: Pen and Gwyn illustrations or by emailing”

Pen and Gwyn is the Yorkshire based brand created by illustrator and designer Nicky Mills. These unique and whimsical illustrations are created using a mixed media style of watercolour, fine liner pen and coloured pencil. Being mostly inspired by the personality and charm of animals, Pen and Gwyn has used this to create their first line of greetings cards and postcards which is available to view under ‘wholesale’ on this website.

Alongside the animal based illustrations, Pen and Gwyn also does portrait work, landscape exploration, digital art, commissions and editorial pieces which are all available to view on this website.

Selling in retailers throughout the North of England and Scottish Borders, Pen and Gwyns fledgling range is selling well. So much so that Pen and Gwyn will do their first craft fair with Craft and Flea in Hull Minster on May 11th. If all goes well Pen and Gwyn will also appear the following weekend at the Craft and Flea in Sheffield. Plus further Craft fair dates will be added to Pen and Gwyns calendar during the spring and summer months so stay tuned for those updates!
